Day 573 | Near Round Mountain carpark: I can hear cars on the asphalt

25 km | zzOz total: 18,879 km

Catastrophic.

Tomorrow the fire danger mostly to the east of here is off the scale, actually they had to extend the scale after the February 2009 bushfires in Victoria to get beyond Extreme.

It’s been 40ºC+ for a week or more over to the west but the predictions are for 43º for Sydney and maybe hotter on the South Coast tomorrow.

I’m looking out my tent here in the hills and it’s totally blue sky.

I had less concern higher up the mountain, the grass was lush and spring green, now somewhat lower, around 1600 m, it looks only moderately tinged with green.

With my new sensible shoes mentality I’m going to be travelling on populated roads rather than cutting through remote forests, put some effort into treadling around to Jindabyne and points south, pronto.

Much of Victoria is vulnerable to fire so I have to reconsider my travels.

Fire is a huge deal in Oz.

When they say Catastrophic they mean it, I don’t want to end up barbecued.
