Day 528 | At Mary's in Adelaide: feet up

rest day

2 weeks in Adelaide, in, or more accurately, on a bed, night time temps have been up there, the body is rested and I’m raring to be unleashed on the final sector of this cross country: up the Murray River and then zooming around to Melbourne via Wilsons Prom.

There were a few grey areas in the plan which modern life has managed to resolve real quick. Got any issue these days then you workshop it in the appropriate forum, in my case the touring forum of bicycles.net.au, the most active group in Australia.

Minutes late the first replies started rolling in, people who have actually been there or live close by, ie, personal knowledge, the best and most accurate kind, and delivered by cyclists who know about the issues of bike touring.

I find that my proposed hack through the Kosciuszko National Park is quite doable, and even legal, the photos that show up are inspiring and I’m looking forward to the radical change in scenery.

The other blank patches in the map were Hattah Kulkyne National Park and the State Forest Park options: Barmah, Gunbower Island.

I’ve whizzed past on a bike previously, down a more major road, but there’s a network of trails that take you down to the river, just a question of a map of the park.

Whammo, here’s the official websites that show the area in enormous detail.

You can’t just scoot past all that, it’s probably going to be the highlight of the river.

The main thing now is the weather, actually the fire danger, not conspiring, it is shaping up for a seriously bad fire season, might even get as bad as the Black Saturday disaster where 173 people died the day before I left Melbourne almost four years ago. I’m hoping I’ll be through it all before the weather gets too bad, I’ll be hightailing directly to Melbourne if the conditions deteriorate.
