Day 484 | Kirrawadinna Creek: just over halfway

68 km | zzOz total: 15,549 km

Snuffle, snuffle.

Snuffle.

It’s pitch dark so in the end I get my headlight to see what’s rustling around right outside, well trying to get under, the tent.

Completely unconcerned there’s an extremely cute marsupial intent on joining me in my accommodations, hamster sized but much more triangular of feature, small ears and eyes, whiskers around the pointed nose, furry body but a long rat-like tail.

Eventually something causes it to scurry at great pace over to a burrow under a saltbush about 20 m away, there’s always a predator around out here, one of those white owls I heard whooshing around last night, or a snake making very limited noise indeed.

I went back to sleep but it wasn’t long before the small varmint returned, this time putting a tiny face right up to the tent mesh and staring in.

It’s me who is the curiosity out here, I’m the thing causing disruption to the usual life and death struggle.

That querulous face was one of the highlights of the whole trip, you think you are travelling a not quite barren waterless moonscape in the Sturt Stony Desert but there’s life out here.

Bundles of life.
