Day 394 | Cockatoo Creek campsite: another day of 4WD action

128 km | zzOz total: 11,381 km

More Y chromosome action, you can have an excess.

The famous Gunshot has a new, easier, Chicken Run, but some of the boys went through the old 4 m vertical drop just for something to do.

I carried the bike and its bits around and reassembled the whole shebang on the other side, getting somewhat adept at this now.

Instead of joining the 30 or so onlookers, the 9 vehicle cavalcade from the Land Rover Club of some state was making away of it, I joined Paula and Alex, currently teaching at Utopia, on the Sandover Highway back in the NT, for a cuppa, and then, when it started to drizzle again, another. A little haven of normality amongst the madness.

The riding can be great, the convoys come through in major bursts, then you get respite, rolling along in isolation, OK, often in granny cog with high cadence, but parts of the track are solid clay, beaten smooth by the 40 or so vehicles that come through each day during the season.

In the looser sand my issue is the steering is wildly erratic at speeds lower than about 7km/hour, the problem being actually getting to that speed in a singular direction but down the bottom of a 4WD rut this can be less difficult, I crank along with the front wheel oscillating dramatically but once said velocity is attained a generally forward motion just needs to be maintained.

I hope that explanation clears things up: I’m having a great time.
