Day 82 | Blue Reef Backpackers: a room to myself tonight, just "pretend" you snore loudly

25 km | zzOz total: 3,789 km

There’s occasional days out camping on the road where you just get immense surprises.

Good surprises.

I had a couple at my beachside camp last night.

First I discovered my dinner entree on the rocks at the beach.

Big, juicy oysters.

They just had to be edible, sometimes you have to be fearless but after all I am from NZ and my quality assurance manual suggested that there would be little to contaminate them in the open ocean. I grew up harvesting mussels from the shore, and cooking them up on the beach in their shells, yumm, but oysters, even if not chilled, now that was a real treat.

This morning was a sea treat of a different species, a humungous kerfuffle as whales, yes whales, ejected themselves from the ocean, crashing around, a leap, then like a huge tree slowly falling, err, without branches, a noiseless kerwump, water flying, like kids at the pub on a Friday night, letting their hair down and attempting to overachieve in their flamboyance, then creating little water spouts, flapping their big flippers, full on extraverts, my own private show.

I didn’t end up getting away until 10am.

The emu that popped out on the road and just stared at me just didn’t rate after that.
